Making Gingerbread Ornaments

It's Beginning To Smell A Lot Like Christmas at my house today. A few weeks ago Linda from Behind My Red Door posted about making her gingerbread dough ornaments and I decided then that I would try my luck at this. I've never made them before. Yesterday I mixed my dough and the recipe said to refrigerate overnight. Believe it or not...I was patient enough to do this. I only rolled out one baking and there's enough dough left to make about four times more. I will spray these with the satin finish. Linda had tried dipping hers in wax and didn't really like the finish so she saved me that step. I couldn't wait to see what they would look like with a ribbon so I jumped ahead and tied one. I'll tell you one thing....they smell good enough to eat however I think I might break a tooth if I tried because they are definitely hard!! I'd like to try drying some of the orange slices to hang. Does anyone know how to do this or would I be better to buy a bag????

  6. Those came out great!!

I dry orange slices in my dehydrator but before I had it, I did them in the oven. Slcie them about 1/8 inch thick, and lay them on cookie sheets covered with parchment paper. This helps to keep them from browning. Put in a 200 degree oven for several hours or until rubbery. Then I put my homespun or ribbon through them and let them hang somewhere with good ventilation to dry even further. You can to the same thing with apple slices but you need to dip them in lemon juice or something to keep them from turning brown before you dry them. Good luck!

  7. My goodness you've been on a roll lately. Those turned out so cute, and I love the ribbon you used too.

I dry my oranges and apples in my dehydrator, but when I didn't have one, I did them the way Linda explained.

I haven't made gingerbread ornaments in a long time and now you've got me in the mood.
I'll have to check out Linda posts because I have no idea where my recipe is.

Those are going to be so cute on your tree.

  9. MMMmmm I love the smell of gingerbread baking. They turned out beautifully. I bake a gingerbread house each year and it turns out really hard too, so while it's edible, I've never been tempted to take a bite!

  10. Hi Sue...
I'm telling you what...I loved these little guys when I saw them on Linda's post and I love them just as much here on yours! I'm just going to have to break down and make some for my country tree!
    They turned out wonderful Sue!
Mom and I use a dehydrator to dry our apples and oranges too. I'm glad Linda told you how you can do them in the oven...Our neighbor used to dry fruit in her oven. The house will smell real good when you do this too! Don't you just love the Holidays!

  11. Your gingerbread men turned out so great. Ever since I saw Linda's post I also wanted to give them a try. I was actually thinking about making them tomorrow...or at least beginning the process. Hubby will be away for the next few days so I need things to do with the girls. We are getting so excited to decorate for Christmas...such a fun time of the year :)
