IT'S WORKING!

I LOVE fresh tomatoes from the garden....to me, there is nothing better. So we make sure to plant plenty of tomato plants in our garden each year because we eat them daily, and I love to can some to use during the year. For quite some time I have looked at kits to buy for hanging tomatoes and thought about trying these. This year my sweet husband decided he would make his own hanging tomato garden. I came home from work one day and he had taken some five gallon paint buckets and drilled the holes to plant the tomatoes. When I saw them I thought they were UGLY....ok.....it really didn't matter how they looked if it worked...but I'm a QUEEN of spray paint now (thanks to blogland) and stopped him from adding the soil and plants until I could "beautify" the buckets. (I hope my BIL in Florida notices that I DON'T spray everything black!) We started with the green and blue because we really didn't know if they would work. A few weeks later we added the red one because they were outgrowing the ones in our garden! I also planted some pepper in the planter sitting on the ground.
This is a close up.....see the tomatoes! I love not having to put a basket around plants, or tie them to keep them from falling over....these just hang. Think we'll do this again next year!

Morning Sue,

Oh my Dad would have a FIT over these. He can't wait till they get moved to Oklahoma (when my mom retires) and he can plant a garden. He has talked about those hanging tomatos also so this would be right up his alley. I'll have to have him take a peek. Your tomatos are already huge in the buckets!!!! How NEAT!

One more thing. Are these growing out of the bottom of the containter like they show on those topsy turvy planters on TV?? If they are did you just drill holes and poke the plants up through them? Sorry for all the questions.

Hope you are having a great weekend. It is already BEAUTIFUL here this morning...YAY♥

Darlene,
He drilled a hole in each side instead of the bottom. I would have drilled it in the bottom but that limited the number...this way there is one on each side....it is working! It's BEAUTIFUL here today too....no rain!!!

Those are wonderful & I love the prim rack they are all hanging from. What a wonderful, clever idea.

Hi Sue, I love this idea; I've seen so many of the hanging tomato vines and wondered if they really work better for the plants so you'll have to keep us posted.
Have a wonderful weekend.

I think they look nice. If it works it works and that is all that matters. :-)

Sue,
I am so glad I stumbled upon your blog. I love the post about your tomatoes. I have had a time with my tomatoes this spring here in Texas.

This is awesome! We're in a spray painting mood over here, too. It's amazing what a little paint can do!

I might need to email you for instructions on these! I know what ones your talking about on T.V., and had we not recently been burned when we purchased some 'grass that will grow anywhere!' that we saw on a commercial, then I would of most likely bought the tomato things we are speaking of, but I like your idea better any way!!
And BTW, yours look so pretty, spray paint does go a LONG way, doesn't it!

What a great idea - I need to try this and I love all the colors of the buckets. And all your plantings in unique containers are right up my alley. I have two of my wheelbarrows filled - one with waves and the other with impatiens. Happy planting and enjoy! Great job! Cathy

I am cracking up that you painted, I mean "beautified" your tomato buckets! Hahaha! They sure do look good, though! (Although, I pretty much believe that you could put homegrown tomatoes in anything and they'd look great!)
